Walmart Announces New Automated Stem Work Supported Distribution Center
Wal-mart Stores, Inc. (WMT) is a worldwide retailer that operates in various formats. The three segments of the company include Wal-mart U.S., Wal-mart International, and Sam’s Club. The company is comprised of discount stores, supermarkets, supercenters, hypermarkets, warehouse clubs, cash and carry stores, home improvement stores, specialty electronics stores, apparel stores, drug stores, convenience stores, and membership-only warehouse clubs; and retail Websites.
Walmart is set to break ground on its new high-tech distribution cent in Shafter, California. Unlike its other distribution centers, the new one will feature Witron technology and rely on STEM workers and tech systems for moving product to the store shelves.
The Witron technology automates stores and retrieves grocery items to build pallets while associates work alongside the system. The new facility will be able to move 40 percent more than the regular distribution centers will.
Walmart will begin training a large portion of its workforce in the STEM components of the new facility, which is expected to begin operation in the fall of 2020 and support nearly 200 Walmart stores.
