“Still Talking” – Vista Partners Daily Market Recap 2/11/2019
US stocks were mixed today following quite a few ups and downs throughout the session. Investors are waiting to see if anything will come from the latest round of US-China talks which are slated to take place later this week in Beijing. The Nasdaq finished the day up 0.13% (9.71 points) and the S&P managed to climb out of the red to finish the session with gains of 0.07% (1.92 points). The Dow, on the other hand, spent most of the day in the negative and as the markets closed, the index was down 0.21% (53.22 points).
Individually, components of the Dow were fairly evenly mixed between those seeing gains and those dealing with losses. Disney (DIS) saw the biggest drop today with a decline of 1.86%. UnitedHealth Group (UNH) was close behind as it sank 1.82%. The company seeing the biggest gains for the session was NIKE (NKE) with an increase of 1.60%.
Atossa Genetics (ATOS) started the week off well as it rose 4.93%. This puts the current price per share at $1.42.
There are two big topics that are weighing on the market to consider this week: the trade talks with China and the attempt to avoid another government shutdown. Negotiations with Chinese officials will kick off again on Wednesday in Beijing with top officials including US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin set to continue those talks on Thursday and Friday.
Closer to home in Washington, lawmakers will be seeking to pass a funding bill that will keep the government open. If a deal cannot be reached by Feb. 15, the government will reenter a shutdown less than a month after a temporary bill was passed to reopen it. Only time will tell if either of the ventures will see real results or if they will prove to be just more talk.
