“I Have A Dream…” – Happy MLK Jr. Day!
After a week of gains, investors will get some time to relax on Monday as the markets close in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Today’s holiday celebrating the beloved civil rights leader was first celebrated on the federal level in 1986 after being signed into law by President Ronald Reagan. But despite the national legislation, the observance was only kept by all 50 states beginning in 2000 as several initially resisted its celebration.
The holiday commemorates the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. who strove to ensure the civil of all of the country’s citizens were honored. His leadership helped to bring about the success of the Civil Rights Movements in the 1960s and although he was assassinated in 1968 when he was just 39, his legacy continues to loom large.
The market will open again on Tuesday, with business resuming as usual. But enjoy the day off!
