Boeing Wins Contract to Replace the Huey Helicopter
Dow 30 component Boeing (NYSE: BA) is the world’s largest aerospace company and leading manufacturer of commercial jetliners and defense, space and security systems. A top U.S. exporter, the company supports airlines and U.S. and allied government customers in 150 countries. Boeing products and tailored services include commercial and military aircraft, satellites, weapons, electronic and defense systems, launch systems, advanced information and communication systems, and performance-based logistics and training.
With the U.S. Air Force’s UH-1N Iroquois helicopters being far past their prime, Boeing has been chosen by the U.S. Air Force to replace the fleet with an award of $375 million for the first four helicopters.
Three other companies were in the race for the desired Pentagon contract including Sierra Nevada Corp., Boeing partnered with Leonardo, and Sikorsky, a unit of Lockheed Martin.
Boeing’s pitch for the contract was the MH-139 which is the militarized version of the AW139, Leonardo’s commercial aircraft.
The UH-1N, commonly known as the “Huey” first entered the Air Force in 1970 with the primary role of assisting in search and rescue missions. Its role has since grown to flying above nuclear missile silos and VIP transportation. A replacement for the UH-1N has been in the process for over a decade.
